The Role of The Shepherd

Between annual children’s Christmas productions and Precious Moments figurines, we have had a lot of exposure to the idea of the shepherd. Yet the soft, sentimental portrayals we often see don’t quite capture the reality of the predator-fighting defenders found in Scripture.

In biblical times, families in the Middle East relied heavily on their sheep for survival—these animals provided food, wool, and hides. A great deal of time was spent finding good pastures and slow-moving, easily accessible streams for the sheep to drink from. This role required a great deal of care and responsibility, and it was held by some of the most influential figures in the Bible (Moses, David, Abraham, and others).

What does having the “shepherding grace” mean?

Now that we understand what was required of shepherds, what does this grace look like when embodied in the church today?

The shepherding (or “pastoral”) gifting is marked by deep compassion and care for others. It is one of the five spiritual gifts mentioned in Ephesians 4:11, given to equip and build the body of Christ.

Shepherds have compassionate hearts that bleed for the broken. They are seers of people who carry a quiet strength—a safe place of restoration for those who are hurting.

This grace is a blessing to those walking through seasons of restoration. A true shepherd not only listens but feels alongside you. They see your problems as their own.

Shepherds As Strong Protectors

Shepherds had to be both brave and physically strong. The shepherd’s rod—usually made of oak with a rounded end—sometimes had nails driven into it, transforming it into an effective weapon against predators such as wolves, lions, and bears).

“But David said to Saul, “... When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear…”

1 Samuel 17:34–36 (NIV)

In the same way, those with the shepherding gift are natural protectors—defenders of the vulnerable. The Father Himself often compared His nature to that of a shepherd, revealing just how deeply He embodies this protective and sacrificial love toward His people.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.”

John 10:11 (NIV)

Shepherds As Nurturing Care-givers

While Scripture often shows Shepherds as fierce defenders, it also reveals their softer side—the gentle, nurturing caretakers who tenderly guide and protect their flocks.

“He will feed his flock like a shepherd: He gathers his lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.”

Isaiah 40:11 (NLT)

The nurturing love and tender care of a shepherd is perhaps the most important part of this grace. This ministry of compassion is vital to the heart of the Church, and its importance cannot be overstated.

The Need For The Shepherding Grace

When I first came to the church, I struggled with the guilt and shame of past sin—just as many of us do. In the same way, many people walk into church feeling out of place or unworthy. This is exactly where the shepherding grace shines brightest.

Shepherds are quick to notice new faces. They make intentional efforts to help others feel seen, included, and at home. Because of this, newcomers and new believers can really benefit from the nurturing love and care of a shepherd. So, if you notice someone new at church, connect them with a shepherd! That person is sure to leave feeling loved, included, and embraced.

This grace is also an important ministry for those walking through deep need—times of loss, disaster, or emergency. When tragedy strikes, shepherds rush to the scene with love, care, and practical support. They shine with the love of Jesus, especially in hard times, reflecting the heart of the Good Shepherd Himself.
